We are a branding and web design firm quartered in Vancouver, WA (just a stone’s throw from Portland, OR). We are technically proficient in the smithing of logos, websites, and print collateral, as well as exquisite pieces of paper and other inspired goods. Make no mistake; our work is cracking good.

Is this good for the company? Is this good for the company? Is this good for the company? Is this good for the company? Is this good for the company? Is this good for the company? Is this good for the company? Is this good for the company? Is this good for the company? Is this good for the company?

The folks at Pipe & Tabor are a small group of artisans absolutely titillated by simple, yet powerful logos, and new solutions inspired by classical design elements. We also happen to share a deep love for all kinds of music, whether it is played on a pipe and tabor, or on a distorted Les Paul through a Marshall full stack amp. You'll often hear what is currently perking our ears on our blog.

The Pipe & Tabor Team

We gallivant with your local coffee shop and international beasts of commerce, and those in between. This includes a variety of companies, from sustainable home developers to international accounting firms. Pipe & Tabor's cause is spearheaded by noble leader, Brian Gage.

Close Kevin Anderson — Marketing Intern

Kevin is our latest intern. He helps with everything from social media and design, to making delicious holiday cider. He posses a Bachelor's degree from Washington State University's prestigious Edward R. Murrow College of Communication. Kevin's previous work experience is located in the sphere of business administration and logistics. While working here Kevin has made a concerted effort to further the cause of the Battle Ground Education Foundation through building of their website.

Close Chandler Wade — Web Developer

Chandler comes to Pipe and Tabor hot off the press at Washington State University Vancouver. Born and raised in the desert that is Tri Cities, WA he spent his early years playing soccer, promoting concerts and snowboarding. Making the move to Vancouver, WA in 2007, Chandler began studying in the Digital Technology and Culture program and the rest is history.
Experience: Photoshop, Dreamweaver, PHP/MySQL, CSS/HTML, Javascript/JQuery

Close Brian Gage — Creative Director

After a 9-year jaunt with Klundt Hosmer Design in Spokane, WA in the 90’s, Brian made the Big Move to the Portland/Vancouver area, and is currently Creative Director at Pipe & Tabor. His 18 years of experience includes projects for clients like Intel, Tektronix, Queen Anne Chocolates, Jeld Wen, and DigiMarc. Nationally, he created the branding for the show “Drive Thru History,” which has been shown on The History Channel International.

Brian has a trained eye and a sharp mind for solutions that get results. He loves to spin vinyl (not chairs) while playing with his two girls. The reigning king of dodgy puns, he’ll regularly keep you laughing... or not.

Close Liana Ryapolov — Business Admin Intern

Liana is our latest Business Administration intern. She is whipping us all into shape! (Although Brian is still feeling a little pudgy). She does everything from organizing the office, inputting our client information into our database, and she keeps us on track with meetings and To Do lists for the day. She also attempts to keep up with our spontaneous remarks (but with her wry smile we aren't quite sure if she's really laughing). Liana proofs and edits the content on our blog and Facebook page. Liana is currently studying Arts and Visual Communications. She also plans to minor in photography.
Experience: Illustrator, Photoshop, MS Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Joomla, Quickbooks and Bento. She is also our resident fashion police.

But enough about us. Because really, it's all about you. Which brings us to. . .

Research Research

The best way to create something new, is to hit the books and consume as much history as possible. After we have a picture of what you’ve done in the past, we can help your company develop unexpected and unique ways of communicating your future.

Design Design

When all that research and archaeology is done, we have a blueprint for fresh ideas. We simplify the most complex ideas into classic and timeless designs; ones that are more than just pretty faces, because we like our work to have brains.

Happiness Happiness

This is the part where you do a jolly little jig, because we just successfully helped you pull off a pretty astounding piece of work. Go ahead and pat yourself on the back. You deserve it.

The Inland NW Rail Museum is devoted to the railroad history of Eastern Washington and are currently building a new museum in Reardan, WA. In building this new museum, they decided they wanted to brand their company. We were ecstatic about this new project, and put our brains together as we searched for the right image to represent their organization. Our goal was to define the logo by its original history. In our research we found that an image of a caboose would best represent the organization and their collection, since all trains used to have cabooses' at the end of their train. Since cabooses' are no longer used in trains it gave it a more historic and nostalgic feel and it also reminded us of the book we grew up reading, "The Little Red Caboose". To finish off this logo with a warm feel, we created the final illustration by hand-drawing it. Check them out at their Facebook page.

Recently, we were given the opportunity to work with Illustra Media on a project called Metamorphosis. The emphasis of this film was on the incredible life cycle of a butterfly and our task was to design the main title and packaging for the film.  Spectacular photography, computer animation and magnetic resonance imaging open once hidden doors to every stage of a butterfly's life-cycle. From an egg the size of a pinhead to a magnificent flying insect. It is a transformation so incredible biologists have called it "butterfly magic." Filmed in North, Central, and South America, Metamorphosis is an unforgettable documentary filled with the joys of discovery and wonder. Check it out! http://www.metamorphosisthefilm.com/

Content is King (or ‘How Lorem Ipsum is killing design’)

Jeremy recently found a great blog article on why Lorem Ipsum is killing design. For those that don't know what Lorem Ipsum is, it's a pseudo form of Latin for designers to use to fill up content space in Print and Web when they don't have the content yet from a client. It's the usual battle of the cart getting out in front of the horse. It's been valuable to designers to move the project forward (whose deadline is fast approaching) when the client isn't pushing the project forward. But is it really helping? It seems like it at the time, but this article makes a case that it's really crippling the final product. Much like buying clothing off the rack at the store might 'sort of fit' but is never quite like having something custom tailored to fit your exact body shape. Definitely something to consider. So clients, let's start prepping your content now to then engage the design/development firm. You can read the article here.

One of our best business partners is the law firm of Joner Lindberg Baker. They are attorneys at law in Battle Ground, Washington and Snoqualmie, Washington. Not your typical lawyers, Loren, Jeff and Matt take the time to really listen and to.... well... be human. Practicing law from a real world down to earth perspective, they are a firm that is relational based. We've enjoyed working with them on both the client end and vendor end, whether it's business law, land use, and family law/estate planning (or even civil litigation). We helped them launch their website last year along with the branding, and have just updated their website with a new blog. If legal services are what you looking for in Washington, you have to give them a call. (and now, they have a brand new office at 35332 SE Center St. in Snoqualmie, in between a wine store and a coffee shop. It doesn't get much better than that!). www.jonerlaw.com

Pipe & Tabor had the pleasure to work with Javier Pena on the recent production "For Once In My Life." It's a document about The Spirit of Goodwill Band by Jim Bigman and Mark Moormann. about a band assembled from workers at a main Goodwill Industries location in Miama, Florida, and the triumphs they experience through the power of music. Those that see and hear the band experience their joy for the music they play, and are changed for the better by the experience. There was even a guest appearance by Emilio Estefan Jr and the Mayor of Miami. It will be shown on PBS February 1, 2011 across the country at 10pm. Consult your local listings for the exact time and date in case it's not consistent from broadcaster to broadcaster. You will also be able to purchase the movie on iTunes on February 2, 2011, and later at their website: www.4onceinmylife.com when it is ready to sell on both DVD and BluRay. We are thankful and have been blessed to even play a small part in this story. Check it out and you will be as well! You can read Goodwill's press release here. **Locally on OPB, it will be shown Sunday February 6th at 10:30pm.
