We are a branding and web design firm quartered in Vancouver, WA (just a stone’s throw from Portland, OR). We are technically proficient in the smithing of logos, websites, and print collateral, as well as exquisite pieces of paper and other inspired goods. Make no mistake; our work is cracking good.

Is this good for the company? Is this good for the company? Is this good for the company? Is this good for the company? Is this good for the company? Is this good for the company? Is this good for the company? Is this good for the company? Is this good for the company? Is this good for the company?

The folks at Pipe & Tabor are a small group of artisans absolutely titillated by simple, yet powerful logos, and new solutions inspired by classical design elements. We also happen to share a deep love for all kinds of music, whether it is played on a pipe and tabor, or on a distorted Les Paul through a Marshall full stack amp. You'll often hear what is currently perking our ears on our blog.

The Pipe & Tabor Team

We gallivant with your local coffee shop and international beasts of commerce, and those in between. This includes a variety of companies, from sustainable home developers to international accounting firms. Pipe & Tabor's cause is spearheaded by noble leader, Brian Gage.

Close Guest Artists — Craftsmen

Close Brian Gage — Creative Director

After a 9-year jaunt with Klundt Hosmer Design in Spokane, WA in the 90’s, Brian made the Big Move to the Portland/Vancouver area, and is currently Creative Director at Pipe & Tabor. His 18 years of experience includes projects for clients like Intel, Tektronix, Queen Anne Chocolates, Jeld Wen, and DigiMarc. Nationally, he created the branding for the show “Drive Thru History,” which has been shown on The History Channel International.

Brian has a trained eye and a sharp mind for solutions that get results. He loves to spin vinyl (not chairs) while playing with his two girls. The reigning king of dodgy puns, he’ll regularly keep you laughing... or not.

Close Liana Ryapolov — Intern

Liana is our latest Business Administration intern. She is whipping us all into shape! (Although Brian is still feeling a little pudgy). She does everything from organizing the office, inputting our client information into our database, and she keeps us on track with meetings and To Do lists for the day. She also attempts to keep up with our spontaneous remarks (but with her wry smile we aren't quite sure if she's really laughing). Liana proofs and edits the content on our blog and Facebook page. Liana is currently studying Arts and Visual Communications. She also plans to minor in photography.

Experience: Illustrator, Photoshop, MS Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Joomla, Quickbooks and Bento. She is also our resident fashion police.

Close Anca Sandu ‐ Illustrator

Anca undermined everyone’s expectations when she decided to become an artist instead of a pursuing a conventional career. Art had no history in her family. She was a pioneer.

Anca studied Visual Communication in Romania, anticipating a career in Graphic Design, but later discovered that her passion for design, illustration and writing could come together inherently in creating picture books. She graduated with a Masters Degree from Cambridge School of Art and now works with Random House on several book projects, her first picture book having been published in December, 2012.

Anca has collaborated on illustration projects for advertising (i.e. Skoda), book illustration and corporate design. She has worked internationally with groups from the UK, Italy, South Korea, Singapore, and Romania.

Experience: Editorial Illustration, Fashion Illustration, Portraits, Children’s Book Illustration, Book Jacket Illustration

Rita is our second intern, bringing her own unique flavors and passions from Brazil! She originally studied Photography in Sao Paulo, Brazil, later moving to the U.S. to study Graphic Design. She has assisted and worked with several professional Brazilian photographers, and has also done freelance photoshoots for magazines, fashion shows, editorials, websites and weddings. She is about to finish her Associates Degree and will be transfer to Portland State University to finish her 4 year Graphic Design degree. Rita is our resident vegetarian and Punk band rhythm guitarist.... because... every studio needs one. Especially one that is as nice as they come.

Experience: Illustrator, Photoshop, MS Word, Power Point, and Studio Lighting.

But enough about us. Because really, it's all about you. Which brings us to. . .

Research Research

The best way to create something new, is to hit the books and consume as much history as possible. After we have a picture of what you’ve done in the past, we can help your company develop unexpected and unique ways of communicating your future.

Design Design

When all that research and archaeology is done, we have a blueprint for fresh ideas. We simplify the most complex ideas into classic and timeless designs; ones that are more than just pretty faces, because we like our work to have brains.

Happiness Happiness

This is the part where you do a jolly little jig, because we just successfully helped you pull off a pretty astounding piece of work. Go ahead and pat yourself on the back. You deserve it.

We've been wanting to work with our friends from Spirit Media for a long time now, and we finally got our long awaited chance!

The design started with a thorough interview process of their clients to gain a better understanding of what makes them unique and do so well at their particular niche. Spirit Media is a creative marketing agency that focuses in TV/Video production, marketing messaging strategy and more.

When creating the 'look and feel' of their logo, we wanted to design a respectable but still cool and forward identity. The typeface chosen and the colors reflect our intentions to create a bold mark that makes a subtle S, with a perfect symmetrical split, using gradient shades of blue.

Pipe & Tabor has been busy this past year, helping many of our video and business clients with custom art asset creation for print, web and motion graphics. Working with a D.C. think tank documentary on Nuclear power (with ColdWater Media and Vidano Films), creating an imaginary OS, Info Graphics, as well as other art assets for the Motion Graphics/AfterEffects work. (Antifreeze Design handled the AfterEffects animation work). You can watch that video here. We also have been working with Tecplot, Inc in Bellevue on Info Graphics to help tell the story of their product, Chorus. The info graphics are being used in both Print + Web. Partnering with our favorite illustrator, Anca Sandu, we worked with Vidano Films on a documentary about preventing child abuse. To help tell the story more confidentially, we created original illustrations to visually narrate the story to the audio interviews. Vidano's animators did a brilliant job, taking Anca's water color washes and rich pen and ink illustrations, and bringing them all to life. The end product is very powerful. We also have several projects (major software company training video assets, info graphics for a major business endeavor, etc.) we'd love to show but are under NDAs. Whether you're a big firm needing to hire some 'extra fire power' for that specific project, or a direct client needing to tell your complex story in a very simple and easy to understand graphic, Pipe & Tabor is your team to help you realize this vision. You can check out a full gallery of this work at our Facebook page gallery here.

Anca Sandu, our in-house illustrator, created this amazing artwork for the band Carpool, with the support/art direction of Pipe & Tabor. This is Carpool's newest EP that was funded by a Kickstarter campaign. We loved their music so much, that we had to lend a hand. We think you'll enjoy them as much as we do. All of the artwork is original, created by our one and only, Anca! You can check out the band here, and listen to their new CD and buy it here at their Facebook Page.

Anca draws her own conclusions

Anca answered our Craigslist's post 9 months ago, thinking that the ad was fun and looked like Pipe & Tabor could be a fun place to work at. (little did she know just how silly of a group of people we were). It didn't take too long until she was immersed in the creative world of Pipe & Tabor.

Here's a sketch of her career:
Anca studied Visual Communication in Romania, anticipating a career in Graphic Design, but later discovered that her passion for design, illustration and writing could 'come together' inherently in the creating of picture books. She graduated with a Masters Degree from the Cambridge School of Art, and now works with Random House UK on several book projects. Her first children's picture book was published in December, 2012. She is currently working on her second book for Random House UK.

Anca has collaborated on several illustration projects for advertising (i.e. Skoda), book illustration and corporate design. She has worked internationally with groups from the UK, Italy, South Korea, Singapore, and Romania. During her 9 months stint with us, she has worked on logos for Cause+Event Portland, Rise to Excellence, as well as helping with the source art for motion graphics projects such as Windows 8 rollout training videos, A Poverty documentary, and a video about curbing child abuse. We're glad we caught Anca's eye with our ad, and she drew her own conclusions about us!

A completely new brand for Mary’s Harvest Fresh Foods… a new company based on a deeply rooted concept. While creating this brand, we made sure to focus on the reason behind this brand, Mary. Her pioneering spirit and focus on family, served as an inspiration for this company and the overall brand. And 70 years later, her family is going back to its roots and expanding on Mary’s vision of fresh and ready food. Read Mary's story here. As with most of our branding projects, we spent time researching the past, their story, and how best to tell their story, all the while keeping our sights focused on the future business plans. With their Italian family background strongly a part of this experience, we choose to use this Italian flavor throughout the overall impression of the brand, from the colors to the typefaces, to the overall 'look and feel.' For the Mary's Harvest Fresh Foods brand, we created everything from the logo identity,  stationary design (Business Card, Letterhead, and envelope) to a full website that integrates their third party ordering system, a WordPress CMS (Content Management System) and captures the heritage look and feel they were looking for to help firmly establish the family focus of this new brand. We even had a fun produce photo shoot with some of their great fresh food offerings! Be sure to keep your eyes open very soon for some of their fresh food offerings!

The Inland NW Rail Museum is devoted to the railroad history of Eastern Washington and are currently building a new museum in Reardan, WA. In building this new museum, they decided they wanted to brand their company. We were ecstatic about this new project, and put our brains together as we searched for the right image to represent their organization. Our goal was to define the logo by its original history. In our research we found that an image of a caboose would best represent the organization and their collection, since all trains used to have cabooses' at the end of their train. Since cabooses' are no longer used in trains it gave it a more historic and nostalgic feel and it also reminded us of the book we grew up reading, "The Little Red Caboose". To finish off this logo with a warm feel, we created the final illustration by hand-drawing it. Check them out at their Facebook page.

Recently, we were given the opportunity to work with Illustra Media on a project called Metamorphosis. The emphasis of this film was on the incredible life cycle of a butterfly and our task was to design the main title and packaging for the film.  Spectacular photography, computer animation and magnetic resonance imaging open once hidden doors to every stage of a butterfly's life-cycle. From an egg the size of a pinhead to a magnificent flying insect. It is a transformation so incredible biologists have called it "butterfly magic." Filmed in North, Central, and South America, Metamorphosis is an unforgettable documentary filled with the joys of discovery and wonder. Check it out! http://www.metamorphosisthefilm.com/
